Twitter Thread: Ilhan Omar and Israel

U.S. representative for Minnesota’s 5th congeressional district, Somali -American politician Ilhan Omar has stirred several contraversies recently. The latest was her fued with fellow Democrat Nita Lowey over support of Israel and alleged anti-Semitic comments. Ilhan’s controversial comments has prompted the Anti-Defamation League to send a letter urging Democratic leaders to consider a resolution condemning Omar’s remarks. That vote will apparently happen tomorrow in the Congress.

In view of the above, I wrote a thread on Twitter summing my views as a liberal Muslim on Ilhan Omar and why I find her views disturbing. I herewith share it with my followers who are not on Twitter.

The controversy of #IlhanOmar is NOT and should not be between pro- and anti-Israel in the #US. She represents an ideology that uses colour and religion to dominate the political sphere. #Israel is just a tool.

#IlhanOmar represents a trending view among Muslims that asserts that only “Jews who reject Israel” are the good Jews, the rest are evil Zionists. I find such view disturbing and destructive. 2/

Also #IlhanOmar has no right to hide under her colour or religion to sanctions her anti-#Israel views. We should not agree with every black and every Muslim just to prove we are good and loyal. We are not a cult to nod and agree with Ilhan 24/7.

While #IlhanOmar openly fight against American Jewish lobby #AIPAC, but she is backed by big Islamist lobby that, not only defend her, but also demonise her Muslim opponents, and brand them as “native informants” 6/

So in short, I do not stand with #IlhanOmar and I find the hashtag #IStandWithIlhan disingenuous and hypocritical.
Ilhan should not use her race and religion to shut the debate about her divisive views. #Enough dragging Islam into politics.
